The event was jointly organised by the Czech Geothermal Association (ČGTA), EAGE Local Chapter Czech Republic and RINGEN. Participants were introduced to SYNERGYS, a project exploring geothermal energy and underground heat storage in Litoměřice, before taking a tour of the centre’s research facilities.
Harun Bitlis from the Finnish company QHeat presented coaxial geothermal wells and their potential for both heat extraction and seasonal heat storage. Using a simulation based on Helsinki’s heat demand, he showed how surplus heat from data centres could be stored in summer and used for heating during winter.
The presentation sparked a lively discussion about how this approach might work in the Czech Republic. The organisers extended the discussion to give participants more time to explore the possibilities. Alongside the technology, the conversation also covered Finland’s experience with permitting geothermal projects.
Participant feedback highlighted practical insights for project development, inspiration from the site visit and opportunities to make new professional connections. There was also interest in further visits to research facilities and operating sites, and in sharing experience from projects in the Czech Republic and abroad.
